The body of works I am presenting is one where recurrent themes leap from painting to painting; wherein ideas appear then reappear in different forms – transformed by new learnings, new outrage or new compassion. Because each work seeks to illuminate real, important (fundamental) issues, their purpose (their function) sometimes gives rise to a form that is, (through real congruence), easy to look at. At times, because the message or theme is troubling, so too, is the form of the painting. I reconcile the form of these troubling works by reminding myself that their beauty, if it exists, is in the truth of their message, and when it (beauty) appears in the form of the painting, this is a pleasant but accidental outcome.
